Research carried out by the Western Development Commission has revealed that in 2017, there were 8,795 enterprises registered in Co. Clare.

This accounted for 2.6% of all enterprises registered across Ireland at the time and 35,000 jobs in this county overall.

Of that figure, some 93.8% of these enterprises were SMEs, with 10 employees or less, demonstrating Clare’s reliance on smaller companies.

This is, perhaps, in contrast to suggestions from some about the level of focus on attracting inward investment from larger international firms.

However, while larger firms only account for 6.2% of enterprises in Clare, they employ 64.9% of people working for Clare businesses.

Construction is the largest sector here, accounting for 18.8% of all enterprises registered in the county, while wholesale and retail came next on 14.3%.

Science and technology followed on 9.9%.
