Concern was raised by senior Gardaí and Clare’s JPC members earlier this year after a spike in economic crimes registered across the county.

It was feared the elderly in particular were being targeted by a serious of scams.

However, new data released today shows while 178 such offences were recorded in the Clare Garda Division between January and October, it’s a significant drop on the 293 documented in the same period last year.

Public order offences locally have also dropped by 10 percent in the past 12 months, a fact that was particularly noted by Ennis Superintendent John Galvin given both society and the economy is far more open now than it was last year.

Driving under the influence detections have jumped by 39 percent, a number that may cause concern to Garda personnel ahead of the Christmas period.

Speeding detections and crashes causing serious injury in Clare both fell compared to 2021’s numbers.

Both assaults causing harm and minor assaults have increased slightly, while domestic disputes and sexual assault detections have also jumped in the first ten months of the year.

Concerns were raised by a number of members about Garda resources and the number of personnel in the Clare Garda Division, with Superintendent Galvin saying he’s “hopeful” of further Templemore graduates being assigned to this county in 2023.
