Plans for a major housing development in East Clare have been rejected by An Bord Pleanála.
The appeals board made the ruling over potential public health concerns arising from sewerage deficiencies.
A saga that started more than two years ago , Sanford Properties LTD first applied for a 61 unit housing scheme in Kilkishen in March 2023.
The proposal envisaged a mix of properties comprising of 10 x two-bed units, 11 x three bed homes , 32x four- bed units and 8x five-bed dwellings.
A part V planning agreement was also struck with the council, meaning at least 13 homes would’ve become social or affordable housing.
A submission from Uisce Éireann stated “the Kilkishen Wastewater Treatment Plant had insufficient capacity to cater for the housing development and that a Wastewater Treatment Plant upgrade would be required to take the load.
”Uisce Éireann also confirmed at the time that it had no plans to upgrade the WWTP within its capital expenditure programme and that therefore the connection would not be feasible.
An Bord Pleanála has now upheld the council’s decision to refuse planning permission.
