East Clare Guidance Counsellor Urges Students To Consider All Options As CAO Offers Released

An East Clare guidance counsellor is urging students to consider all opportunities before making a decision on their CAO offers.

75% of students are expected to receive an offer of one of their first three college choices today.

1,361 students in Clare received their Leaving Certificate results last Friday and in less than an hours time they will receive the first round of CAO offers.

Three quarters of students are expected to receive one of their top three college choices when the offers go live at 2pm.

Despite meeting the points requirement, there’s concern inflated grades will lead to some students missing out on their first choice course.

A lottery system will decide the fate of students who just reach the cut-off point for courses in high demand.

A Shannon principal says the CAO system places ‘horrendous’ pressure on students.

However, Principal of St. Patrick’s Comprehensive in Shannon, Mary Costello, says she doesn’t know how an alternative system would work.

An East Clare guidance counsellor is reminding students of the practical steps they can take when making a decision based on the offer available to them today.

Students have until September 14th to reply to the first round of offers, with the second round due to be released on the 19th.

Aoibheann Byrt, Guidance Counsellor at Scariff Community College, is reassuring there are many actions students can take today in response to their offers.
