€760,000 Spend On Defence Forces At Shannon Since 2012

The Minister for Defence says anti-war protestors have caused the state to spend hundreds of thousands of euro on boosting security at Shannon Airport.

Minister Simon Coveney has told the Dáil that since the beginning of 2012, €760,000 has been spent to allow the Defence Forces assist Gardaí in protecting American military aircraft at Shannon.

America's use of Shannon has been the constant focus of criticism and protests for several years, and US military jets, or planes carrying US troops, have been damaged there on at least three occasions since 2003.

Minister Coveney says the state is spending thousands of euro a week to avoid a repeat.
