Farmers' grants are of vital importance to the country's rural economy, with farmers throughout Ireland sharing over €1.5 billion euro in payments last year.

Of this, €65.7 million came to County Clare.

Two-thirds of that funding came from the Single Payment Scheme, where Clare's total of just under €45 million was exceeded in just ten other counties.

€12.6 million was paid to Clare farmers under the Disadvantaged Area Scheme, while €6.7 million came from REPS and €1.6 million from AEOS.

The figures relate to payments made last year – a further €7.4 million has been paid this year in respect of 2014, and Minister Simon Coveney says these payments are continuing.
