Almost 16 million euro in Government funding is being invested in new facilities for the elderly in County Clare.
St Joseph’s Community Hospital in Ennis has been identified as a flagship project, receiving the biggest single investment in the Mid-West region.
Over 42 million euro in Government funding has been announced for the improvement of nursing home facilities in the Mid-West Region, 16 million of that going towards four projects in Clare.
St Joseph’s Community Hospital in Ennis will receive the largest portion of the funding – 12 million euro is being provided for the construction of a new state of the art 50-bed unit, as well as a major refurbishment of the existing building.
The funding will be rolled out over the next number of years, with works on the 140-bed facility expected to be completed by 2021.
A further two and a half million euro will also be invested in Raheen Community Hospital in Tuamgraney over the next three years, while Regina House in Kilrush will receive 550,000 euro in the coming year.
And, 730,000 euro has been announced for Ennistymon Community Hospital as part of an overall spend of over 1.3million euro, with improvement works there due to be completed in March.
The funding comes as part of a development plan for 90 centres nationwide, in order to bring them in line with HIQA standards.
