More Than €114 Million Paid In Compensation By UL Hospitals Group In Last Ten Years

The UL Hospitals Group has paid out more than 114 million euro in compensation claims in the last ten years.

Nearly 8.4 million euro in damages was paid out in the Midwest last year alone.

Figures released to the Aontu party following a parliamentary question tabled show more than 1.6 billion euro in compensation has been paid out by the State’s seven hospital groups since 2012.

114 million of that, or around 7 percent, fell under the UL Hospitals Group, which covers University Hospital Limerick and University Maternity Hospital Limerick, as well as Ennis, Nenagh, St John’s and Croom.

€8.3 million of that figure was paid out last year, with a further €9.5 million in 2020.

However, that number was a significant fall, presumably on account of the pandemic, of the 19.2 million euro that was forked out in compensation by the Group in 2019.

The year before that, 2018, saw 34.6 million paid out – which is nearly a third of the entirety of compensation paid in the last decade.

Despite the high figure, ULHG’s numbers are the second lowest out of the country’s seven groups, with only Children’s Health Ireland, who operate Crumlin and other acute paediatric services in Dublin behind them, with 102 million euro paid in compensation since 2012.

Statement from the UL Hospitals Group

Safety is an important component of everything that we do in UL Hospitals Group. However, there are times when things do go wrong, and, in line with the Incident Management Framework 2020, we actively encourage that incidents are identified, reported and reviewed so that learning from the safety events can be shared to improve the quality and safety of the services we provide.

UL Hospitals Group has established structures that look at the learning from any safety event to ensure that it is captured for implementation.

The State Claims Agency may also provide Hospital Groups with learning notices, which we review for implementation.
