Drop In Number Of Irish Births

The number of babies born in Ireland each year is continuing to decline – with a drop of more than 5 per cent in the last 5 years.

Despite the decline, Ireland has the highest birth rate out of all 27 EU member countries with Irish people reporting the highest fertility rate across the bloc.

The findings come as part of the latest Perinatal Statistics report from the ESRI which also shows a 3 per cent drop in the number of still births in comparison to last year – while there has been a 33 per cent drop since 2003.
