Doubts Cast Over Syrian Ceasefire

French President Nicolas Sarkozy says he doesn’t believe Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad is being sincere, nor that the UN-backed ceasefire is sustainable.

Yesterday – Sarkozy and US President Barack Obama demanded that Syria respect the terms of a peace plan drawn up by UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan.

He says the deployment of observers to Syria must be done as a matter of urgency.

It comes as reports of fresh clashes between government troops and rebels surface – the skirmishes are understood to have happened near to the border with Turkey.
