Further Doubt Cast Over Future Of 60-Bed Modular Unit At UHL

The Chair of the Oireachtas Health Committee has cast serious doubt over the future of the planned 60-bed modular unit at the region’s main hospital.

Clare’s Independent TD, Dr Michael Harty says the overrun in spending for the National Children’s Hospital will result in the majority of health projects being put on the long finger, including developments at University Hospital Limerick aimed at tackling overcrowding.

That’s despite reassurances provided by Health Minister Simon Harris to Clare’s Junior Minister Pat Breen in recent weeks, though just hours later in the Dáil, Junior Health Minister Jim Daly gave no such assurance.

The 60-bed modular unit at Dooradoyle was due to open next year, with a 96-bed unit planned within the coming four years, but Dr Michael Harty says all bets are off now.
