Deputy Dooley was elected on the first count of the ballot, which was conducted using proportional representation, while Michael McDonagh was selected after the second.

The meeting heard calls from a number of Fianna Fáil members that a third candidate be added to the party ticket, but delegates were told that the directive to run two candidates had come from the party's national constituencies committee.
