Dooley Accuses Government Of Neglecting Rural Ireland

Clare’s Fianna Fáil TD claims the Government has shown “scant regard” for the creation of a strategy aimed at maintaining rural life in Ireland.

Deputy Timmy Dooley’s comments come in light of ongoing uncertainty over the future of the post office network here.

It’s after Independent TD Dr Michael Harty admitted he would reconsider his support for the Government if recommended cuts are implemented.

Clare’s Independent TD has accused Fine Gael of betraying the trust of coalition partners by not implementing the programme for government.

Dr. Michael Harty is warning the minority government that he could withdraw his support for the coalition in the event that a large number of post offices are closed down.

There are fears for the future of hundreds of rural post offices, as the company warns its business model is not sustainable.

However, Dr. Harty says promises to help the post offices have not been kept.

Speaking today, Clare’s Fianna Fáil TD wouldn’t be drawn on whether his party could also withdraw from their agreement with Fine Gael, saying the issue is much bigger than that.

Deputy Timmy Dooley, the party’s Spokesperson on communications, told Clare FM’s Morning Focus that he believes the Government has failed to recognise the importance of the post office network.
