Domestic Violence Bill Won’t Protect People At Risk

Women and children threatened by violence won’t be protected by the current Domestic Violence Bill.

That’s according to Safe Ireland, who wants coercive control recognised as a specific offence but there are concerns in Government that it is too problematic to provide a definition for it in law.

Safe Ireland, disagrees – It’s spokesperson, Caitriona Gleeson from Killaloe describes coercive control.

Coercive control has been an offence in the UK since 2015 with over 200 people charged with the offence since.

Caitriona Gleeson says it’s possible to prosecute.
