Disposable income for people in Clare is 10% below the national average.
The latest figures from the Central Statistics Office indicate that low rates of social benefits, as well as fewer people working for foreign enterprises here is contributing to people in this county having less money to spend than those living elsewhere.
The CSO’s County Incomes and Regional GDP Report, for which research was carried out in 2021, shows the annual disposable income of the average person in Clare is €21,835.
By contrast, those living in Dublin have an average annual disposable income of €27,958, putting them 15% above the state average.
The figures also show that this county is slipping further below the average point – dropping from 6.4% below in 2020 to 10.4% below in 2021.
Clare has the fifth lowest rate nationwide of social benefits and other transfers such as pension contributions or PRSI, at just €6,673 annually per person.
Workers in this county make up just over 1% of the workforce nationwide while 32% of people here are paid by foreign enterprises which is the seventh highest in the country.
The average income in Clare is €31,143 which is more than €4,000 below the national average of €35,878.
