Events throughout Kilrush and West Clare will be officially launched in Carrigaholt on the evening of Friday May 3rd.

The next ten days then will see a range of events, including walking tours, exhibitions and lectures while memorial mass will also be said in various locations.

The 41 people drowned in the 1849 ferry disaster at Cammoge Point will be remembered with a 13km walk, while soup from famine times will be served as a fund-raiser for countries currently in need

A minute of silence will be observed in all schools at 12 noon on Friday May 10th, and events will culminate two days later with the 2013 National Famine Commemoration, attended by President Michael D. Higgins.

That will be preceded by a flotilla of vessels on the Shannon Estuary symbolic of emigration.
