Department Insists No Rendition At Shannon

The government has insisted that Shannon Airport has never been used by the US for so-called rendition flights.

The Department of Justice has been responding to the publication of a damning report into CIA torture, which outlined how torture was used against terror suspects.

However, the Department insists that Ireland does not have a case to answer, as there is no evidence of rendition flights passing through Shannon.

The Department accepts that some commercially-leased aircraft may have been involved in activities relating to extraordinary renditions, but says there is no evidence to suggest that this occurred when the planes passed through Ireland.
