The Department of Integration and Clare County Council have confirmed that they’ve received no offer for the use of a property in Corofin, as emergency accommodation for asylum seekers.
It comes as protestors both in favour and against the use of the site for Asylum Seekers have been demonstrating on approach to the building this week.
Concerns initially emerged within the local community in Dysart over the weekend after works were carried out a property which had lied unnoccupied for a number of years.
A video circulated online appeared to show 25 beds in place at the previously vacant dwelling, prompting a protest on Sunday night at the approach road to the house at Scool, by locals who were frustrated over a lack of prior consultation.
Residents believe the area lacks the sufficient resources to cater for a significant population influx, while they also maintain the local road network poses safety risks.
Today, the Department has confirmed that IPAS has received no offer for the use of a property in Corofin as emergency accommodation, while Clare County Council also says it has received no formal application for the use of the dewlling under the ‘Ukrainian Offer A Home Scheme’.
Clare’s Fianna Fáíl Senator spoke to the group last night and feels the demonstration is unnecessary, owing to the fact that no emergency accommodation contract has been agreed between the proprietor and the state.
Mountshannon Senator Timmy Dooley says, however, the government can’t continue to leave communities in the dark or similar situations will occur.
Meanwhile an Ennistymon-based Seantor, is raising concerns over the infiltration of far left and far right elements on local matters.
It comes as Gardaí are investigating the alleged assault of a man in his 70s in Corofin over the weekend.
Its understood the incident took place at the site of a protest against asylum seeker accommodation in the area on Sunday night.
Fine Gael representative, Martin Conway is calling on the public to be aware of misinformation spreading on social media.
