The number of people seeking the support of the Simon Communities has increased by 26 per cent.
The charity says over 8,000 people have asked for their help over the last two years.
It says seven thousand homeless people will be spending Christmas Day in emergency accommodation.
National Spokesperson Niamh Randall says there needs to be long term solutions to the crisis.
