Figures revealed to Ennis Councillors show the highest annual amount spent to tackle deliberately started blazes was over 65,000 euro in 2009. 20 malicious fires were recorded in the county town last year, down from a high of 57 two years previously.
The Clare Fire Service says bonfires, burning of rubbish, vehicle fires and fires in unoccupied buildings are the most common complaints.
Ennis Independent Councillor Paul O’Shea says the money being spent on tackling these fires is effectively a waste.
