Defence Forces Personnel Assisting Flood-hit Communities To Increase From Today

The Minister for Defence has promised a significant increase in the numbers of Defence focrces personnel assisting communities with flood defence efforts.

It comes as flood waters are continuing to rise in many areas, following another night of heavy rainfall.

Twelve homes became flooded in the Gort area overnight, while a further 30 homes remain under threat as waters continue to rise.

Additional Troops and a defence forces helicopter have already been been deployed to assist in flood defence measures and people travelling in the area are being urged to stick to the main routes.

Clare County Council area staff, Clare County Fire & Rescue Service and Clare Civil Defence are continuing to provide support on the ground in Clonlara.

While, troops have also been deployed to aid in the transportation of people living in a dozen home isolated by flood waters in the Springfield area, as well as the operation of water pumps.

The local authority says water levels on the Lower River Shannon at Springfield have risen by 225mm since yesterday and the current peak levels are partly due to rising water levels on the Mulkear River, which enters the River Shannon south of Annacotty.

Meanwhile, the ESB says the flow of water from Parteen Weir will be maintained at 470 cubic metres per second today but the power company is warning that water levels in Lough Derg may reach 2009 levels in the coming days – posing a serious flood risk.

Hundreds of roads around the country remain flooded after the latest weather warning came to an end.

Conditions are set to improve for a time today, but tomorrow will be wet again – bringing the risk of more flooding.
