Decision on Clare town councils expected in September

The Taoiseach has indicated that proposed major changes to local government structures will be dealt with by The Environment Minister in September.

Town Councillors in Clare have expressed disappointment that a decision on the future of the urban authorities wasn’t made this week following the last Cabinet meeting ahead of the Dáil summer break.

Under Phil Hogan’s plans 25 of Ireland’s 80 town councils could be abolished with fears for Kilkee and Shannon and speaking this week the Minister again indicated that significant change was needed.

Speaking to Clare FM at yesterday’s ceremony to mark 85 years of the ESB in Ardnacrusha – Taoiseach Enda Kenny says he expects the matter to be dealt with swiftly after the summer break.
