Decision Due Today On Next Year’s Property Tax In Clare

Clare Councillors will decide today on the level of local property tax to be charged here next year.

The tax rate has been cut by 15% here for the past two years, but that could now come to an end.

Clare is among a number of counties where Councillors have the option to vary the property tax rate, due to the level of income for the local authority.

For each of the past two years, local representatives have voted in favour of a 15% cut in the tax, the maximum cut allowed.

However, it's still worth less than €1 a week to over 90% of homeowners, and yet takes around 1.5 million euro out of the Council coffers.

Amid an ongoing pressure on local authority finances, there has been speculation in recent weeks that Councillors could reduce or even scrap the reduction.

Such a decision would likely rely on a change in approach from Fianna Fáil members, who are the largest bloc on Clare County Council.

A decision will be made at a special meeting on the matter this afternoon.
