Decision Due Next Month On Planned ALDI Store For Shannon

Clare County Council is expected to decide next month on whether it will permit a planned new ALDI store in Shannon.

The retail giant has submitted an updated planning application for the two-story development at Airport Road near the town centre, and says it’s on track to open in July 2023.

The supermarket chain has applied for permission to construct the store before now, most recently in last May, and today’s announcement of updated plans comes after the Council sought further information from Aldi on that proposal.

The planning application for the 1,315 square metre store already includes a two-storey unit for coffee shop / restaurant use which has now been further amended to incorporate more facilities.

The design now includes an improved pedestrian and cycle crossing on Airport road, as well as a new pedestrian footpath at the front of the site.

Plans also include 106 car parking spaces available for customers, bike parking facilities and four electric vehicle charging points.

Aldi says 25 new permanent jobs are due to come on stream once the store opens, with up to 80 jobs being created during the construction period.

If given the green light, it will be ALDI’s fifth store to open in Clare.

Clare County Council is due to issue its decision on the development in around three weeks time.
