A debate has been ignited over whether a friary in Clare should be restored to its previous glory or remain in its current state.
Quin Abbey was occupied by Franciscan monks until the 17th century and after the last friar of Quin passing away in 1820, the building came under the care of the Board of Works as a national monument in 1880.
Previous restoration projects on similar sites saw the Holy Cross Abbey in Thurles return to an active place of worship and King John’s Castle in Limerick developed as a tourist attraction.
Ogonnelloe-based architect Garry Miley is suggesting the Quin site should be developed for the benefit of the community rather than for tourism.
