Founding member of the Scoil Samhraidh Willie Clancy, Muiris O Rócháin, has died.
The Dingle native who has lived in West Clare for over forty years passed away yesterday evening following an illness.
Muiris O’Rochain spent many decades dedicated to Irish culture, folklore and community life and has been a hugely respected figure in Irish traditional music in County Clare and beyond.
After marrying a Miltown Malbay native – Una Guerin in the 70’s he moved to West Clare and was key to the campaign to set up the Wille Clancey summer school in honour of the legendary piper with whome he was friends.
In 2001, he was selected as President of Oireachtas na Gaeilge and last year was presented with a prestigious TG4 Gradam Ceoil award for his contribution to Irish traditional music.
Muris O Rócháin is survied by his wife Una, son Seamus and daughter Máire and extended family.
