The President of the Union of Students in Ireland was last night arrested in the Dáil.
John Logue and around one hundred students were in the visitor gallery, as TDs voted on a Sinn Fein and Fianna Fail motion calling on the Education Minister to freeze student fees and third level grants at their current rates in December’s budget.
While politicians were voting at around 9 o’clock last night, the students stood up and turned their backs to the TDs – as a symbol of how the Government has turned its back on students.
It’s against Dáil rules to stand up in the visitor gallery and when Mr. Logue refused to sit down – he was arrested and taken to Pearse Street Garda Station.
He was released from Garda custody about two hours later and cautioned.
