Clare Labour TD Michael McNamara has backed the government as the first stage of the Social Welfare Bill passed through the Dáil last night.
However during the preceding debate the deputy expressed his ‘disgust’ and ‘disappointment’ at elements of his coalition’s budget.
The bill will introduce a ten euro cut per month to child benefit and an annual cut of 325 euro to the carer’s respite grant.
Deputy McNamara argued that a 3% levy on pensions worth over 60 thousand euro could have averted the controversial cut to the respite grants of carers.
But despite his anger, Deputy McNamara insists he will remain part of the coalition, saying this is the best way to influence future policy.
