“Truck Loads” Of Rubbish Dumped In East Clare

Serious concern has emerged in East Clare over unlicensed waste collectors dumping truck loads of household rubbish there.

The problem has emerged in several locations, most recently on the 12 O’Clock Hills near Kilkishen, with the perpetrators burning the waste to destroy evidence of where it’s come from.

Clare County Council says its environmental wardens have successfully collected some evidence which has identified certain individuals and businesses.

Statement from Clare County Council

We are appealing to the public to assist us in reporting any unlicensed waste collectors operating in their area. In particular, if you observe a vehicle involved in suspected illegal waste collection, please report this information including vehicle registration details to the Environment Section, Clare County Council.

There has been a significant increase in cases of indiscriminate, illegal dumping and burning of waste in locations throughout east and southeast Clare in recent weeks. Such activity is causing irreparable damage to the local environment, is putting property and lives at risk, and is causing significant expense for the responding agencies.

Clare County Council’s environmental wardens respond to every reported incident and each incident is investigated. Evidence identifying certain individuals and businesses has been retrieved from the dumped material and will assist Clare County Council in successfully securing a prosecution(s) in relation to these dumping incidents. CCTV has been used in this area and roadside checkpoints will be carried out with the assistance of An Garda Síochána response to this growing problem.

Clare County Council is appealing to the public to only use authorised waste collectors when disposing of domestic or commercial waste. Householders and business who give their waste to unauthorised waste collectors are committing a criminal offence, and are liable to face prosecution and fines. Details of authorised collectors can be found at www.nwcpo.ie or by contacting the Environment Section, Clare County Council. Reports of illegal dumping can be made to our Environment Department, Clare County Council, New Road, Ennis, Clare (0656846331) or the Anti Litter Hotline 1800 606 706.
