IBAL has praised the Doolin community for cutting down on litter at the local pier.

The latest litter league survey has seen the North Clare tourism hotspot upgraded from a ‘litter blackspot’ twelve months ago, to ‘moderately littered’.

There was praise for Lahinch too, as Clare FM’s Fiona Cahill reports.

Last year, Doolin was named a “litter blackspot” in the Irish Business Against Litter Survey, something that led to anger among many community members.

But a lot of work has been carried out by the local community since then, including the installation of solar-powered bins by a local business and clean-ups by the tidy towns committee.

And it seems to have made a big impact, with this year’s IBAL report noting a considerable improvement.

Spokesperson for IBAL, Conor Horgan says small issues are holding the area back from top marks.

One of the local ferry operators in Doolin is welcoming the positive results.

But Eugene Garrihy of Doolin2Aran Ferries says units for cigarette butts have been provided in the area, and he believes that what’s needed now is more support from the Council.

The overall impression created at Lahinch, meanwhile, was a positive one, with several opportunities for separating waste throughout the surveyed area.

IBAL’s Conor Horgan hopes more areas will follow in the footsteps of Clare’s coastal communities.

Nationally, only 16% of the 42 monitored were clean.
