Opponents Of Ennis Motorway Plaza Vow To Continue Campaign Against It

Opponents of a planned Barack Obama style motorway plaza on the outskirts of Ennis have vowed to continue their campaign against it.

It comes as Supermac’s Ireland Ltd has withdrawn it’s plans for the 10 million euro development at Kilbrecken, adjacent to the M18 motorway, in favour of a fresh application, which will be the fourth relating to the project.

The company has told Clare FM that it was felt that the elements required under this request would be best dealt with as part of a new application.

In a statement, a group of Ennis businesses have said the move isn’t surprising, given the controversy surrounding the planning application and that they remain committed to objecting to a future application for a development of this scale.

The business people have declined to comment on air, when contacted today by Clare FM.

Ennis Fine Gael Councillor Johnny Flynn, who also made a submission against the plaza has been telling Clare FM’s Fiona Cahill that it shouldn’t be allowed to go ahead in its current form.

“Given the controversy that surrounded this planning application, we are not surprised that the applicant decided to withdraw this particular application. However, as a group we remain committed to objecting to a future application for this development based on its scale, location and close proximity to Ennis, coupled with our conviction that the delivery of such a development will negatively impact the local Ennis economy”.
