Government Urged To Rethink US Military Presence In Shannon Amid Afghanistan Crisis

The Government is being urged to rethink its policy of allowing US military planes to refuel at Shannon Airport amid the ongoing crisis in Afghanistan.

Both NATO and the US Government have defended America’s decision to withdraw its forces, with the Taliban now having assumed control of the country for a number of days.

US military have been permitted to refuel at Shannon since 2002, with successive Governments here insisting the use of the Midwest base does not compromise this country’s neutrality.

Edward Horgan, an anti-war campaigner with the Shannonwatch group, claims there’s an argument that Ireland has contributed to ongoing issues in Afghanistan over a number of years.

Clare FM has approached the Department of Foreign Affairs for comment but has yet to receive a response.
