Ennis has been named the fifth cleanest town in Ireland in IBAL’s Summer Survey.

Eight of the county town’s ten assessed sites were top ranking, among them O’Connell Street, Lidl on the Gort Road, Clare County Museum.

In addition, Tim Smythe Park was said to be “very deserving of the top litter grade” in spite of “plenty of activity on a very sunny afternoon”.

Maynooth was ranked number one in the survey, followed by Mallow, Kilkenny and Clonmel.

Over 90% of towns surveyed were deemed clean, with the two exceptions of Dundalk which was “seriously littered” and Tralee which was “moderately littered”.

Just 28% of cities were given a clean status, with Waterford and Galway deemed the only clean cities surveyed.

It was noted that Cork City Centre, Mahon, Limerick City and Ballymun have all “made progress” while Dublin City Centre has deteriorated from “moderately littered” to “littered”.

Coffee cups were the most pervasive form of litter and were found at 20% of sites surveyed.

In spite of restrictions having ceased over a year and a half ago masks were identified at 7% of sites.

For the first time, vapes were included as a litter type as they were found at 6% of sites surveyed.
