The Department of Transport has confirmed it is to appoint an independent mediator to resolve the dispute surrounding the Doolin unit of the Irish Coast Guard.

The North Clare unit has now been ‘off the board’ for more than a week and is no longer permitted to respond to emergency situations.

It’s after six members of the unit resigned from duty, including the unit’s Officer in Charge, prompting the Coast Guard to stand down the service and liaise with other stakeholders in the area to provide cover in the interim.

Addressing concerns raised by Clare Senators Martin Conway and Timmy Dooley in the Seanad, Junior Transport Minister Hildegarde Naughton says steps to appoint a mediator in the dispute have begun.
