The retail giant says it expects to open the outlet, located on the Kilrush Road, in late 2023.

The 1,000 square metre store will be in the Westpoint Retail Park, which has seen the development of a HSE Outpatients Department site since 2018, when the change of use application was refused by An Bord Pleanala.

ALDI says 30 new permanent jobs will be created at the store, with up to 50 jobs supported during the construction phase.

The development has been granted subject to 10 conditions, which include issues relating to litter control and that the store can only open between 8am and 10pm.

The move had been the subject of documentation from local businesses that raised concerns about the development, while local residents also made submissions.

The Chief Executive’s order to grant permission, however, stated the development won’t ‘unduly affect the viability and vitality of Ennis town centre’.

It will be Aldi’s second store in Ennis, with its supermarket on Francis Street open since June 2005.

The German supermarket chain also operates three further shops in Ennistymon, Killaloe and Kilrush.
