Clare’s Live Register Shows June Increase

Clare’s live register figures show a jump of nearly 200 people claiming some form of unemployment benefit here.

However, there are indications that the tourism season is delivering a significant number of seasonal jobs, particularly in coastal areas.

After last month’s live register figures showed dole queues here at their lowest levels in 12 years, this jump just one month later might appear to be disappointing.

However, as it coincides with the end of the academic year, June has almost always seen an increase in the unemployment indicator.

This year’s monthly jump of 195 is the highest in four years, but the more localised figures show some signs for optimism.

In North Clare, perhaps buoyed by the Irish Open in Lahinch, the numbers signing on actually dropped by nine.

In West Clare, there was an increase of only 18 and in East Clare the live register jumped by 38.

This means the vast majority of the monthly increase – almost 150 – came in the greater Ennis area.

Year-on-year, the live register figure is down by 669 or almost 13%.
