Much of what is contained in the 165 billion euro plan, from a Clare perspective, contains significant projects which are already underway or have already been completed.

These include 51 social housing units in Shannon East, redevelopment at Kilrush’s Regina House and the long awaited Killaloe bypass works, where construction is due to begin early next year.

What hasn’t got underway though and stands out in the plan is a rail connection encompassing Shannon Airport, Shannon Town, Ennis, Sixmilebridge, Cratloe and Bunratty.

The plan will use direct rail spur links in the current Limerick to Galway line, with connections as far as Adare and Limerick Junction going in the other direction.

Inagh-based Senator Roisin Garvey says when built, the project will provide a viable alternative to cars for those in this county and further afield.

Other works earmarked in this county in the plan include an upgrade of the existing wastewater treatment plant in Lahinch, as well as at a similar facility in Clonroadmore.

A new aircraft hangar at Shannon Airport is envisioned, as is a full Shannon flood relief scheme with a target completion date of the end of 2030.

No timelines have been given for a number of key projects though, with the key questions now remaining on how and when it can be delivered.
