It’s understood 23 citizens are currently in the country, and 15 of them want to come home immediately.

That’s despite the Taliban trying to assure citizens their human rights would be protected, with thousands still fleeing the country after their takeover.

The Irish Government’s being urged to accommodate more than the 150 people they’ve agreed to take from the country so far.

They’re due to arrive here in the coming days.

Clare’s Fianna Fail TD has been in contact with a number of Afghan citizens in the country, who he says have connections to this county and want to come to Ireland.

Cathal Crowe, who’s his party’s spokesperson on aviation, believes their lives and the lives of others are at risk.

The Foreign Affairs Minister says he hopes to be able “to do more” when it comes to the Afghan refugees Ireland takes.

The Irish Refugee Council wants to see the number increase to at least 1,000.

Minister Simon Coveney says we will have to talk to the militant group to make a number of things clear.

A Midwest anti-war campaigner, meanwhile, insists the removal of a US military presence at Shannon Airport would not have an economically adverse impact on Ireland.

It comes amid fresh calls for the Irish Government to disallow permission for American planes to refuel at the facility, which they have been doing so since 2002.

Edward Horgan, an anti-war campaigner with the Shannonwatch group, believes Ireland would gain more diplomatic respect at a global level if they revoked permission for the US military to refuel at Shannon.
