An Bord Pleanala has given ALDI the green light to open a new 3.5 million euro store in Ennis.

The new store will be part of Westpoint Retail Park on the Kilrush Road and promises to create up to 30 permanent jobs, with up to 50 jobs be supported during the construction period.

The new store will provide 96 dedicated car parking spaces for ALDI shoppers, along with four electric vehicle charging spaces and 20 bicycle parking spaces.

Construction is due to get underway in the coming months, with a planned opening date at the end of 2023.

This will be ALDI’s second store in Ennis, with its Francis Street store having become a key part of the town since opening in June 2005.

The 1,000sqm store will be powered by 100% green electricity, supported by 121sqm of solar panels on its roof.

Commenting on the decision, Colin Breslin, Regional Managing Director, ALDI Ireland said: “We are delighted to receive planning permission from An Bord Pleanála to open a second store in Ennis. Our Francis Street store is one of our busiest and most popular stores in the country.”

“Even more households and families in Ennis and the surrounding areas will soon be able to shop at their local ALDI and enjoy our range of great quality fresh produce, Irish ingredients and household products at value that just won’t be beaten. At a time when everyone is grappling with rising costs, the ability to offer our customers the best value at locations most convenient to them matters more than ever.”

Operating four stores in Clare, ALDI is deeply invested in the local community. ALDI currently partners with one local Clare food and drink producer and is committed to growing its Irish supply base, increasing the number of Irish products available in its stores.

Currently working with over 330 Irish food and drink producers, ALDI spent €1 billion with its Irish suppliers in 2021.

To date, ALDI’s Clare stores have donated over 32,000 meals to local charities through FoodCloud, saving the charities over €40,000. Each store nationwide is also part of ALDI’s Community Grants network, with Milford Hospice and Ennis Lions Club just two of the many local charities and community groups that have availed of the €500 bursary grant in recent years.
