Police say 22-year-old Broadford GAA player Niall O’Brian, who was on holiday with a group of 20 friends, died from serious head injuries after getting into an altercation with another man.

A spokesperson for Greek police says a 20-year-old man arrested in connection with Niall O’Brien’s death, told police he punched him and he fell to the ground.

Mr O’Brien was taken by ambulance to a local health centre on the island of Ios, where he was pronounced dead shortly afterwards.

The man detained by police, along with several other witnesses, will provide testimony before a judicial investigator today.

After this evidence is considered, a decision will then be made on whether to charge or release the detained man.
