Gardaí in Clare are warning renters to be wary of online adverts after receiving a report that a woman was conned into handing over a significant sum for a property that never existed.

The woman saw what she presumed was a legitimate advert on social media for a property to rent in Dublin and handed over a deposit of €1,463, as well as months rent.

Clare’s Crime Prevention Officer is urging renters to do their homework on any property before handing over money and to use legitimate and we-ll known rental agencies where possible.

Sergeant Triona Brooks says people shouldn’t have over money until they’ve seen the property and once satisfied should use a cheque or bank draft.

She ‘s advising that people shouldn’t make any payments until given the keys and they’ve signed the rental contract.

“You should always check that the keys fit in the lock. Don’t transfer money unless you have carried out all the relevant checks and you are absolutely sure that the listing is genuine and don’t be embarrassed if you have been scammed; report it to your local Garda Station and contact your bank” Sergeant Brooks Concluded.
