Gardaí in Clare are warning people not to be duped by con-artists involved in romance scams online.
Clare’s Crime Prevention Officer says there’s been a rise in scams, whereby criminals pretending to be romantically interested in a person, gains their affection and trust, with the aim of conning them into transferring funds to accounts.
Sergeant Triona Brooks says those involved, tend to want to communicate through instant messaging and texts, rather than through dating websites or chat rooms, and will be slow to divulge information about themselves.

While there have been no reports of this type of scam in Clare so far, Sergeant Brooks is urging people who use dating sites to be cautious.
