Crime Figures For Clare “Aren’t Reflective Of Reality”

A community activist believes crime figures for Clare aren't reflective of reality.

285 burglaries were reported in the county in the first nine months of this year, an increase of 28 on the same period last year.

But Richard Cahill claims that smaller crimes aren't being reported,

Figures revealed at the Clare's Joint Policing Committe meeting this week show a rise in burglaries in the county with one home per day, on average, being burgled.

The majority of burglaries are carried out during daylight hours which the Head of the Clare Garda Division says is due partly to a rise in travelling gangs using motorways.

Trends shows that more homes were burgled in urban areas, while sheds and outhouses are being targetted by thieves in rural areas.

Community activist Richard Cahill believes the figures don't take into account the number of incidents that aren't reported, saying people feel smaller thefts are not followed up on.

The Sixmilebridge man has described as "shameful" the lack of Garda resources available to deal with burglaries and he says response to crime boils down to statistics.

Meanwhile, the head of the Clare Garda Division says there’s no evidence to suggest that the closure of nine Garda Stations in the county has impacted on the number of burglaries being carried out here.

Chief Superintendent John Kerin says the majority of these crimes are being committed in areas where Garda Stations are open.
