Counting of votes to elect the country’s 9th president will get underway today.
The primary focus will be on the Race for the Aras with no decision on the referenda to be announced until a new president elect is declared either late tonight or tomorrow.
The ballot boxes will be opened at 9 o’clock this morning in count centres nationwide including at the Clare Inn in Newmarket on Fergus
The Presidential votes will first be separated from the two referendums, which will be set aside – until counting to elect a new president is complete.
And at some stage tonight the returning officer will decide whether to continue counting until a result is known in the early hours, or suspend it until tomorrow.
