In what was described as one of the most crucial decisions taken by the county council in recent years, local representatives have rejected the idea of any privatisation for Shannon Airport at its meeting last evening.

However, while snubbing both the sale and long term lease of Shannon, both of which were proposed, Councillors agreed change is required.

Councillors have backed back a proposal which, if adopted, would retain state ownership of Shannon, but see it fall under the control of local public sector authorities

Clare County manager Tom Coughlan says if adopted, the plan would see Shannon operated by bodies in the Mid West.
Clare County Council will now forward their proposal to Booz and Company who were recently appointed to draw up a report on the future operation of Shannon Airport by the Transport Minister.

Booz is expected to report to Minister Varadkar by the end of November with a decision expected by the end of the year.
