Council Warns Against Unnecessary Travel Ahead Of Storm Frank

Clare residents are being advised to avoid unnecessary travel overnight tonight due to forecast severe weather.

The first winds and rains of Storm Frank have been felt in West Clare this morning, and around an inch of rain is forecast by Met Eireann through to tomorrow morning.

Strong winds are also in store, with gusts of up to 120 kilometres per hour, and these will be strongest in coastal areas, leading to a risk of flooding during high tide.

The flood threat is also increasing at Springfield, Clonlara and in other communities on the banks of the Shannon.

Defence forces personnel are in South-East Clare, using flat-bottomed boats and mechanised pumps to channel water away from a vulnerable area

The ESB has also increased its rate of discharge from Parteen Weir by 35 cubic metres of water per second.

Elsewhere, a number of towns and villages are on high alert for flooding as Storm Frank makes landfall.

In Athlone, residents have been using pumps to divert water from their home while in Ballinasloe, a temporary flood barrier has been installed in the St Michael's Square area, extra sandbags have been distributed.

Townlands near Gort have also been badly hit.
