Clare County Council has been asked to seek reform of the litter laws to deal with local residents who aren’t disposing of their household waste appropriately.
While councillors say the vast majority of Clare homeowners use wheelie-bins or proper waste disposal methods, the local authority has heard calls for tougher laws to deal with those who don’t.

Ennistymon Councillor Joe Arkins says Irish laws deal with litter in a public place only – meaning dumping in back gardens is going un-noticed despite the risk of rodent or fly infestation and the public health hazard for neighbouring homes.
