Council urged to ban fracking

Members of Clare County Council will be asked to ban the controversial practice of Fracking today.

Fracking or hydraulic fracturing is a controversial technique to extract natural gas from shale and currently the UK based, Enegi Oil group is carrying out research into the potential to exploit such natural resources in the Clare basin.

The basin stretches from Loop Head north along the coast to the Cliffs of Moher and into mid-Clare, and though the company doesn’t have permission to drill, local opponents fear it could happen this year with damaging implications for the environment.
