The Shannon Estuary could become the latest cruise ship destination under a new proposal.
It comes as the local authority has confirmed it’s exploring a new tourism package for West Clare.
The idea floated by Cree Independent Councillor Dinny Gould is that cruise ships could now dock at Moneypoint’s Port and then visitors would be free to be collected by tour busses to explore the Estuary or the Wild Atlantic Way.
A similar initiative is currently in place at Shannon Foynes Port, where tourists are routinely brought into Limerick or Bunratty Castle & Folk Park.
Clare County Council has since confirmed, however, that it’s collaborating with the ESB, which owns Moneypoint Power Station on a potential tourism package for West Clare.
Cree Independent Councillor Dinny Gould claims it will have major benefits for all involved.
A member of the Loop Head Steering Committee, meanwhile, is calling for the council to maximise the small cruise tourism offering that’s already in Clare.
Cillian Murphy believes smaller vessels should be transporting hundreds of visitors on a regular basis to piers on the peninsula.
