The Mayor of Clare has called a special meeting of the County Council in response to the government’s decision to with-hold funding from the local authority.

The Department of the Environment has announced that the Council’s allocation under the local government fund is to be cutback in line with compliance rates in the county for the household charge.

With 62% of people having paid the controversial tax, this means the reduction for Clare County Council will be over 240 thousand euro.

Phil Hogan has told the county manager that the situation for the fourth quarter will be reviewed when that payment is due, and Councillor Pat Daly believes the Council could be looking at a significant drop in funding.
